Coated VS. Uncoated… an age old question?

It really depends what look you are going for.  Depending on what my customer is printing will depend on what I suggest. And sometimes… I mean not always… because I am pretty much perfect… but SOMETIMES I would recommend a coated stock but my client likes the uncoated better or vice versa.  For example.  When there are dark solid colours, like in the Encore Catering flyer, I believed that it should be on a coated paper because it would look “classier” and the colour’s would pop more.  However, after discussing with my customer, what I realized, is they were no longer going for the classy look, but they were looking for the modern, hip look to change their clientele. Which means, their instincts were right. The uncoated stock will give them a more modern, rustic feel.

This is one thing that I would not have predicted. So, keep in mind, if you are the professional, you still have to listen to your clients to make sure you are providing them with the look, feel and mood they are trying to create.

What emotion are you trying to incite with your marketing materials?

Uncoated stocks come in many different brightness’s, can be recycled or not! But I can promise any pen or marker will be able to write on it.
A coated stock has a finish on it so that it is glossy before it is printed. These stocks can sometimes be written on, however if there is an added varnish it can become more difficult.
